Transnational Intellectual Property Law (4067): Modern intellectual property law is global, and IP counseling, litigation, and licensing increasingly require a working understanding of foreign IP laws and the international IP system. This course will comparatively examine selected major national IP systems, survey the principal international treaty arrangements for IP protection, and explore related transnational IP issues. In addition to addressing challenges faced by global practitioners such as securing IP portfolios and strategizing multinational litigation, the course will surface policy debates about the appropriate contours of the international IP regime in areas ranging from medicines to fashion to artificial intelligence. Prerequisites: This course assumes a basic understanding of U.S. IP law, so Introduction to Intellectual Property (LAW-4005) is strongly recommended. Elements used in grading: Class participation (including multiple-choice polls and short online assignments), attendance, and final exam.
