Biography
Diane T. Chin is a Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Stanford Law Scholars Institute. Diane served the law school as its first Associate Dean for Public Service and Public Interest Law from June 2009 through July 2023 and founded the Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law in 2007. She also served the law school and University as a Co-Founder and Acting Director of the Stanford Center for Racial Justice.
Diane started her legal career as a staff attorney and Skadden Fellow at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law of the Boston Bar Association when she graduated from Northeastern University School of Law. She has also served as a staff attorney and project director at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area. Later, she worked as a housing attorney for Disability Rights California (then known as Protection & Advocacy, Inc.), as a senior trial attorney for the Office of Citizen Complaints for the San Francisco Police Commission, as executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, a civil rights organization based in San Francisco Chinatown, and as director of Equal Justice Works/West. Diane was an adjunct member of the New College of Law faculty (Race and the Law, Constitutional Law) and an associate director of the Henderson Center for Social Justice at UC Berkeley Law. Her substantive areas of practice have been within the civil rights field: hate violence, police misconduct, affirmative action, and housing discrimination. At Stanford, she also is a lecturer in law, teaching Public Interest Law and Practice, various policy labs, and other courses.
