Biography
Sonya Mirbagheri Cheney serves as Vice President, Global Ethics and Compliance Counsel at Mattel, Inc. where she oversees all aspects of the Law Department’s Compliance function including internal investigations, Company policies, employee training, and advising business units. Prior to her role at Mattel, Sonya served as Vice President, Associate General Counsel at ViacomCBS as well as the Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Deputy Compliance Officer for CBS Corporation where she served as a member of the company’s Privacy Counsel and Law Diversity Committee. Prior to joining CBS, Sonya was a litigation associate in the New York office of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and a member of the firm’s Women’s Advisory Council.
Until last year when she and her family moved to California, Sonya also held a position as a Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School, teaching an externship seminar titled “In House Counsel.” She is a member of Chief and the Global Advisory Board of the Women in Law Empowerment Forum. Sonya earned her J.D. from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and served as President of the Student Senate. She received her B.A. with honors from the School of International Affairs and Public Policy at Princeton University.
