Courses Pre-Approved for NY Bar for LLMs
Stanford Law School Courses Approved Under Rule 520.6
Courses Approved as of January 2026
Section 520.6 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors of Law of the State of New York Board sets forth various requirements for foreigners seeking admission on the basis of an LLM or JSM degree. Stanford Law School has submitted requests for approval for its course offerings and the following is a list of courses that the New York Court of Appeals has deemed in compliance with Rule 520.6.
Rule 520.6(b)(3)(vi)(a) requires “a minimum of two credit hours in a course or courses in professional responsibility.” The following courses meet this requirement:
- Legal Ethics
- Legal Ethics: The Plaintiff’s Lawyer
- Professional Responsibility
- The American Legal Profession
Rule 520.6(b)(3)(vi)(b) requires “a minimum of two credit hours in legal research, writing and analysis.” The following courses satisfy this requirement:
- Advanced Legal Writing for American Courts
- Advanced Legal Writing for American Practice
- Advanced Legal Writing: Business Transactions
- Advanced Legal Writing: Business Negotiations
- Advanced Legal Writing: Global Litigation
- Advanced Legal Writing: High-Tech Transactions
- Advanced Legal Writing: Public Interest Litigation
- Advanced Legal Writing: Litigation
Rule 520.6(b)(3)(vi)(c) requires “a minimum of two credit hours in American legal studies.” That can be satisfied with:
- Introduction to American Law
Rule 520.6(b)(3)(vi)(d) requires “a minimum of six credit hours in other courses in subjects tested on the New York State bar examination, where a principal focus of the courses includes material contained in the Content Outline for the New York State bar examination published by the State Board of Law Examiners.” Six credit hours translates into eight quarter units of such coursework. The Court of Appeals has deemed that the following courses count toward meeting that requirement:

Not all courses are offered this year. Courses marked with an asterisk (*) cover subjects tested on the Multistate Bar Examination (the multiple-choice section) as well as the New York section of the bar exam.
