Business, Law, and Strategy in the Startup Economy

In this experiential course, a small cohort of students will engage with an actual business to identify, scope, research, and assess the significant legal, regulatory and business challenges and opportunities to the startup’s business model. The course focuses on challenging law students to consider and engage with the complex ways in which legal and regulatory issues intersect with business strategy and how use of legal and regulatory strategies can both advance and undermine a new and disruptive company’s chances of success. Students will work under the supervision of faculty and selected outside practitioners to perform a legal and business audit of the startup and to identify and consider different strategic paths extending from their findings. Students will present their work to the startup and a panel of selected SLS faculty and outside practitioners at the end of the quarter.
