The Moot Court Board welcomes all interested first- and second-year students (and anyone not graduating this year) to register for the Marion Rice Kirkwood Moot Court Competition to be held Fall and Winter Quarters, 2023-2024.
For those of you unfamiliar with Kirkwood, the Competition is open to twenty two-person teams. At the beginning of Fall Quarter, each team will be given the record of a case, together with the decision of the appellate court. Each team will write a rough draft and a final draft of a brief to the Supreme Court of the United States on a particular side of the case. Then, at the beginning of Winter Quarter, oral arguments will be held. Each team will argue both sides of the case. Teams will advance to quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with two teams advancing to the final round in February 2024. Each participant in Kirkwood receives two units of academic credit in the Fall, one unit of academic credit in the Winter Quarter. Clinic participation in the Fall precludes participation in Kirkwood; clinic participation in Winter is generally permissible, but check with your instructor.
If you want to participate in the Competition, find a partner and submit this form. THE DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, JUNE 2nd AT NOON. THIS IS A FIRM DEADLINE. DO NOT MISS IT AND THEN BEG FOR MERCY! In the event that more than twenty teams sign up, a lottery will be held. You will be notified of the teams selected in the lottery by Friday, June 9th, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
An informational meeting with the Moot Court co-presidents, Danny Zhang (dannyz@stanford.edu),
Ling Ritter (nritter@stanford.edu), and other members of the Moot Court board will be held on Thursday, May 18 in room 95 from 12:50 p.m.-1:45 p.m.
