After spending four years at SLS, David B. Owens (JD/MA '10) went first to Chicago to clerk for Judge Diane Wood of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, then to Montgomery, AL to clerk for Judge Myron H. Thompson of the Middle District of Alabama. Now, back in Chicago, David works in two spaces. First, David is an attorney at a civil rights law firm, Loevy & Loevy, where he represents plaintiffs in 1983 litigation involving claims arising out of a host of constitutional provisions; e.g., Fourth Amendment search, seizure, and excessive force cases, First Amendment chilling and retaliation cases, and civil wrongful conviction cases that often rest upon violations of due process (through coerced confessions, Brady violations, faulty eyewitness identification, etc.). Second, David is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School where he works as a Staff Attorney and instructor for The Exoneration Project, a clinic that represents the wrongfully convicted in post-conviction proceedings advocating for their freedom.
