Alumni Reception and SFJAZZ Event
Featuring Roy Haynes and the Fountain of Youth Band
7:00 pm – Reception
8:00 pm – Performance
GSB and Law School alumni are invited to a private reception with Randall Kline, Executive Artistic Director of SFJAZZ, followed by a performance by Roy Haynes and the Fountain of Youth. Randall Kline is the co-founder and Executive Artistic Director of SFJAZZ – the San Francisco Jazz Organization. Now in its 28th year, SFJAZZ is the largest non-profit jazz organization in the Western United States and presents more than 100 concerts a year to more than 100,000 fans. Randall Kline will discuss Roy Haynes’ influences and the jazz culture in the Bay Area.
About Roy Haynes
Since 1945, Roy Haynes has played with major league artists including Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Danilo Perez and scores of others. While he came out of the bebop era, Haynes has always kept his style modern, colorful and dynamic – – literally re-defining the role of drums in modern jazz. He has led his Fountain of Youth Band for the past decade, and while his sidemen are always at least two generations removed, Haynes still emerges as the most playful musician on stage.
Cost is $40 per person for GSB and Law School alumni and their guests. The concert, drinks and light appetizers are included. Registration deadline is November 1.
