Please join the American Constitution Society and the National Lawyers’ Guild at a panel to showcase the broad range of progressive lawyering careers beyond what you are ordinarily exposed to in law school. Our panelists work in direct services, public defense, local government, impact litigation, and policy.

Jonathan Erwin-Frank is a staff attorney at Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto, where he advocates for tenants through the Housing Program. Before joining CLSEPA he researched over-incarceration as a Ford Fellow at the Brennan Center for Justice. While at Stanford Law School he took part in the Criminal Defense Clinic, representing clients in state criminal cases and a federal criminal appeal, and taught at San Quentin Prison with the Prison University Project. After graduating, he clerked for the Honorable Richard Boulware of the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada.
Andrea Evans is a Campaign Manager and Senior Policy Planner at Tipping Point Community, focusing on the Chronic Homelessness Initiative. Prior to joining Tipping Point, she consulted at the Immigration Legal Services Network, developing NextGen America’s strategy for funding and supporting a nationwide immigration legal services network. She was the Legal Director of the Center for Justice & Accountability, where she supervised attorneys in complex civil litigation involving human rights abuses and represented civil parties in the trials of former leaders of the Khmer Rouge before the ECCC. She was an associate at Keker & Van Nest and Steptoe & Johnson. She sits on the KIPP Bay Area Board of Trustees and is a former Commissioner with the San Francisco Fire Commission and the San Francisco Women’s Commission. She is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School.
Sajid Khan is a Deputy Public Defender in Santa Clara County, where he has represented indigent clients in misdemeanor and felony matters for eleven years. He previously spent a year at the Contra Costa County Public Defender. He maintains a blog on social and criminal justice titled “Closing Arguments” and co-hosts The Aider & Abettor Podcast, a commentary on law, society, and justice. He graduated from U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Hastings College of the Law.
Javier Serrano is Deputy County Counsel at the Santa Clara County Counsel’s Office. He works on the Social Justice and Impact Litigation team litigating affirmative cases on behalf of the County and the People of the State of California. He played a key role in the County’s successful litigation challenging the Trump Administration’s executive order denying federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions, through which the County obtained a permanent injunction and successfully blocked implementation of the executive order. For this work, he was named a 2018 California Lawyer Attorney of the Year. Prior to joining the County Counsel he was an associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP and an attorney in the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. After graduating from Stanford Law School, he clerked for the Honorable Louis F. Oberdorfer of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and for the Honorable Lucy H. Koh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Vasudha Talla is a Senior Staff Attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California. She focuses on defending and advancing the rights of immigrants and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities. Before joining the ACLU, she worked with the International Refugee Assistance Project in Beirut, Lebanon, and the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Mexico. She was an associate at Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady LLP, a civil rights law firm, where she focused on prison conditions and police misconduct litigation; she also worked at the New York Civilian Complaint Review Board, where she published a comprehensive report on improper home entries and searches by the NYPD. She clerked for the Honorable Keith P. Ellison of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
