Human Rights in the 21st Century
Never in human history has there been an international system for human rights. Yet, current events ranging from genocide to everyday tragedies continue at an alarming rate. As the world’s population increases and global trade brings new wealth, how should international law respond? Helen Stacy proposes new approaches to consider and discusses the role the law and courts must play to forge a better human rights vision for the future.
Helen Stacy is director of the Program on Human Rights, a senior fellow at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law and senior lecturer in law and a Europe Center Research Affiliate. As a scholar of international and comparative law, human rights, and legal philosophy, she has produced works analyzing the efficacy of regional courts in promoting human rights, differences in the legal systems of neighboring countries, and the impact of political and social values on legal thinking. Dr. Stacy’s recent scholarship focuses on how international and regional human rights courts can improve standards while also honoring social, cultural and religious values.
