All directors and governance experts are aware of their critical role in driving succession and the importance for the organization; however, very few are satisfied with their efforts in this area. Why is that so? What prevents organizations from increasing the quality of their succession efforts, and what are some of the practices that organizations are using to move their succession activities forward? Recent turmoil at several large corporations (some driven by activist investors) underscores the importance of C-suite succession.

This session brought together leading experts on corporate governance and succession drawn from academia, consulting and practice, to discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of succession planning. The panel also discussed the key findings from a recent report on succession planning conducted in the fall of 2013 by the Rock Center for Corporate Governance and The Institute of Executive Development which included in-depth interviews with executives and directors at 20 companies regarding their succession and executive development practices.
