Proposed as a national strategy by China’s president Xi Jinping, the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road, better known as the One Belt and One Road Initiative (OBOR), has soon become the world’s largest economic platform. Despite all significant efforts and commitments made by the Chinese government, practical challenges and legal risks should not be neglected. Please join us to welcome Professor Hongliu Gong, Associate Dean from the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, for a presentation on a brief introduction of the OBOR Initiative, the challenges in the context of international economic law, and how the Chinese government could possibly address the challenges.

Professor Gong is among China’s top scholars in the areas of WTO law, International Economic Law and International Dispute Resolution. She also serves as an expert for the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Commission on Trade and Investment Policy. Notably, Professor Gong and her colleagues at the UIBE Law School have established the “Belt and Road Legal Research Center”, first of its kind and now the only one in China, conducting cutting-edge research on the B&R Initiative in the context of international business and economic law.
