Journal Club: Neuroscience of Addiction and Drug Law
Neuroscience is rapidly solidifying an understanding of the neural basis of addiction. What are the implications of this understanding for drug law reform? How can we reconcile traditional moral and practical reasons for punishing drug users with the mechanistic, determinative explanations for addiction offered by neuroscience? How do both traditional drug sentencing laws (The Federal Sentencing Guidelines) and reform efforts (San Francisco Drug Courts) stack up to the neuroscientific evidence? The discussion will be facilitated by Jonas Jacobson, SLS ’09.
