Even just a generation ago, interest in “artificial intelligence” was largely confined to academic computer science, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, engineering, and science fiction. Today the term is understood to encompass fast-evolving technologies with the potential to reshape economics and finance, employment, education, health, geopolitics and security, and the legal system. As we build a world where we may increasingly use and depend on these systems, what are the challenges associated with making AI systems that operate in an ethical manner? Why is this project difficult, and what is its relationship to understanding how to define and achieve socially-responsible behavior in humans and organizations? How will we know if we’ve succeeded?
