Co-sponsored by Stanford Law School and the University of Vienna School of Law

The past decade has brought about fundamental changes in the governance of convergent communications sectors worldwide. This presentation highlights some of these new governance trends, and then focuses in depth on one, namely on the departure from sector-specific competition regulation in favor of the sole application of general competition law. It discusses the reasons for change, presents empirical evidence from Europe and the U.S., and assesses the implications of such change in the light of the value conflict inherent in the media that they meet both economic goals and central, often constitutionally granted functions in society that ought to be protected in the public interest.
