This presentation will explore human rights violations in Mexico as a result of both the drug war and the oppression of indigenous communities. Laura Carlsen, Director of the CIP Americas Program, is an expert on the drug war in Mexico and its impact on the rights of marginalized populations, especially women and the youth. Gloria Munoz is a renowned independent journalist who authored an authoritative work on the Zapatista Revolution, gaining notoriety and respect for living among the revolutionaries in the jungles of Chiapas for seven years. She now runs the independent internet magazine Desinformemonos, which focuses on indigenous and broader social movements that seek justice and equal treatment from the historically oppressive and corrupt Mexican government. The crux of the presentation will be a discussion of how human rights are jeopardized in modern Mexico and what can be done to ensure their protection from Mexico and the United States.
