The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an autonomous organ of the Organization of American States (OAS) that promotes and protects human rights in the Americas. It exercises oversight over the United States, since the U.S. is a member of the OAS.

This question will be addressed by Elizabeth Abi-Mershed, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Adjunct Professor of Law at American University, and Margarette May Macaulay, Commissioner at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Country Rapporteur for the United States, and former judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
