A workshop on all aspects of interacting with media
How do you work with media outlets to expose human rights abuses? What about getting media attention to the suit you just filed on the environmental and health effects of toxins in the water supply?
Many aspects of public interest and public service work involve interacting with the media, including making press statements, managing press conferences (including questions from the media), and organizing written press materials.
Come participate in a workshop led by Dr. Luciana Herman designed for law students covering these skills and others involved in media relations.
THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL SLS STUDENTS. IT IS NOT OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
Please RSVP so we know how many folks to expect: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/law/forms/Hermanmedia.fb
Luciana Herman, Lecturer in Writing and Rhetoric, teaches policy communications courses and workshops through the Policy Lab at Stanford Law School. Her teaching, research, and consulting help young policy makers, entrepreneurs, and leaders develop strong communications, advocacy, and writing skills. In addition to policy writing and communications courses at Harvard University and now at Stanford, she also helped to build the curriculum for the Harvard Kennedy School Communications Program, and served as a Head Preceptor in the Harvard College Expository Writing Program.
Dr. Herman has many years of experience advising graduate students and undergraduates on their academic, professional, and personal life paths. Dr. Herman’s academic interests include American political speech and party formation, racial formation, immigration policy, and the policies and public speech that shaped the American revolutionary and Federalist periods. Raised in Arizona, Dr. Herman follows Southwest politics with a particular interest in the political realignments associated with immigration and the rise of the new west.
Dr. Herman began her career in communications with the National Water Alliance, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit, research think tank that advised congressional legislators on water policy. At the NWA, she wrote speeches for congressional members, researched and reported on new developments in water policy and environmental remediation, and helped to organize national symposia. Dr. Herman then earned her PhD in English, with a focus on political rhetoric, at the University of California, Berkeley. She is now working on a writing manual for public policy makers and completing a book on the impact of the Haitian Revolution on early American party formation, immigration policy, and political speech.
