Lord Jonathan Sumption on Democracy and the Rule of Law: The View from Europe

The Neukom Center is pleased to welcome Lord Jonathan Sumption as the 2025-2026 Visiting Distinguished Judge. Lord Sumption is a former justice on the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and a renowned historian. He has written extensively on the rule of law and democracy. His lecture, Democracy and the Rule of Law: The View from Europe, will address the retreat of the rule of law in Europe and in the United States.
This event is open to the public and will be offered both in-person and online. RSVP is required.

Jonathan SUMPTION began his career as a medieval historian teaching the subject as a Fellow of Magdalen College Oxford, before leaving academic life to practice at the English bar. He was a leading advocate in commercial, administrative and constitutional law. In 2012, we was promoted directly from the bar to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, one of only five direct promotions to the highest court since the creation of the UK court system in its current form in the 1870s. He retired from the judicial bench in December 2018. In 2019 he delivered the prestigious BBC Reith Lectures on the theme of Law and the Decline of Politics (published as Trials of the State). He is a regular commentator of British and American constitutional issues. |
