Each year, the Stanford Constitutional Law Center hosts the Publius Symposium, which celebrates a notable recent book in constitutional law. This year, we are proud to co-host the symposium with the Stanford Center for Law and History to honor a book of profound importance: The Second Creation: Fixing the American Constitution in the Founding Era, by Stanford History professor Jonathan Gienapp.
With a deep appreciation of the historical materials, Gienapp’s book tells a story of just how unsettled the American constitutional experiment actually was during the first several decades of the republic. In the process, it highlights little-known aspects of founding era history and also offers provocative challenges to various modes of constitutional interpretation, including originalism. Please join an all-star cast for a discussion which promises to be of interest to constitutionalists, historians, and political theorists alike.
