Stanford Law School's San Diego Alumni Chapter is pleased to invite you to The Practice and Art of Judging, featuring three SLS alumni who were sworn in as judges within the last two years. Our distinguished guests are The Honorable John B. Owens, JD '96, of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, The Honorable Patricia Guerrero, JD '97, of the San Diego Superior Court, and The Honorable Selena Dong Epley, JD '95, of the San Diego Superior Court.

Each will briefly talk about their path to becoming a judge, then you will have a chance to join them and fellow alumni and guests for an intimate reception over wine and light appetizers. Registration for alumni and guests is complimentary but required by Thursday, January 29.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES
The Honorable John B. Owens, JD '96
The Honorable John B. Owens serves on the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Prior to becoming a federal judge in 2014, he was a partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP (where he focused on white collar investigations and appellate matters), and a federal prosecutor for more than 11 years in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, and San Diego. He served as the Chief of the Criminal Division in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California, and received two Director's Awards for his work there. The television show American Greed featured two of his prosecutions, and he obtained the longest sentence for a white collar defendant in the history of the Southern District of California in United States v. Cao.

Judge Owens graduated first in his class from Stanford Law School in 1996, where he was an Executive Editor on the Stanford Law Review. After graduation, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable J. Clifford Wallace of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and for the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court of the United States. His written work has appeared in the California Law Review, the UCLA Law Review, the Northwestern Law Review, and other law reviews. Judge Owens and his family live in San Diego.

The Honorable Patricia Guerrero, JD '97
Judge Guerrero was appointed to the San Diego County Superior Court in May 2013, and has served as a Family Law Judge since October 2013. Judge Guerrero currently serves as Assistant Supervising Judge for the Family Court. Immediately prior to her appointment, she was a partner with Latham & Watkins, LLP in San Diego. Her primary practice areas were environment, land, & natural resources, white collar and government investigations, and general commercial litigation. She also worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in San Diego in the General Crimes Section. Judge Guerrero is a graduate of Stanford Law School (1997) and the University of California, Berkeley (1994).

The Honorable Selena Dong Epley, JD '95
Selena Dong Epley was appointed to the San Diego Superior Court in July 2014 after nineteen years as a deputy public defender with the San Diego County Office of the Primary Public Defender where she also served as an assistant supervising attorney for a central felony team. She earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1995 from Stanford Law School where she served as co-president of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and an associate editor for the Stanford Law Review. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, she worked as the legislative director for the United States Student Association in Washington D.C. for two years before attending law school.
