Learn how to request government information and datasets that will deepen and transform your research approach. Join award-winning journalist Aaron Glantz to learn strategies for successful requests under the Freedom of Information Act.  Journalists, lawyers, policy researchers, and interested lay people will benefit from learning techniques for FOIA requests.

Mr. Glantz will discuss:

* How he used the Freedom of Information Act, in combination with state open records laws and leaked documents, to expose runaway opioid prescriptions and overdose deaths in the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system. The investigation led to Congressional hearings, a new law signed by President Barack Obama, and criminal probes by the FBI and DEA.

* How he used the Freedom of Information Act, in combination with confidential sources, a hidden camera investigation, and leaked company documents to expose predatory recruitment practices by the for-profit University of Phoenix. The investigation revealed payments by the University of Phoenix to the US military — in violation of Pentagon policies. In response, the college was kicked off every US military base in the world. Its stock fell by more the 70 percent.
