A conversation with the judges for the 2021 Kirkwood Moot Court Final

The Marion Rice Kirkwood Memorial Moot Court Program invites you to join us as we welcome Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar (Ph.D. ’00) of the California Supreme Court, Judge Michelle Friedland (B.A. ‘95, J.D. ‘00) of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and Judge Daniel Bress of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to Stanford Law School.
Professor Jane Schacter will moderate a discussion on the American judicial system.
Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. He previously served as the Stanley Morrison Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He graduated from Harvard and Yale Law School, received a Ph.D in political science from Stanford, clerked for Chief Judge Mary Schroeder of the Ninth Circuit, and began his legal career at the U.S. Treasury Department.
Judge Michelle Friedland is a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She previously worked as a litigation partner at Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco. She received a B.S. in Biology from Stanford, attended Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar, and graduated second in her class from Stanford Law School. She clerked for Judge David Tatel of the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor of the United States Supreme Court.
Judge Daniel Bress is a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He previously worked as a litigation partner at the Washington, D.C. office of Kirkland & Ellis. He received his B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard and graduated order of the coif from the University of Virginia Law School, where he was the Editor-In-Chief of the Virginia Law Review. He clerked for Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the Fourth Circuit and for Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court.
Professor Jane Schacter is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Stanford Law School. She graduated from the University of Michigan and Harvard Law School. Early in her career she was an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, an associate at Hill & Barlow in Boston, and a law clerk to Judge Raymond J. Pettine of the District of Rhode Island.
