Timor-Leste Legal Education Project Background:
Launched in 2009, the Timor-Leste Legal Education Project (TLLEP) is a partnership between The Asia Foundation (TAF) and Stanford Law School (SLS). In the long term, the project ʼ s goal is to institutionalize ways for local actors, in close partnership with TAF and SLS, to positively influence the development of domestic legal education. The initial focus has been to provide accessible and dynamic educational materials targeted at building local legal skills in contracts, civics, and legal ethics, with a view to implementation in Timorese law schools and teaching centers. TAF provides crucial connections to important local partners and institutions, as well as background capacity research and an inventory of needs. In September 2010 , SLS students traveled to East Timor to further develop the project and integrate the local legal context into the educational materials. SLS site visits will be paired with visits in exchange by members of the Timor-Leste legal education community to Stanford.
