Stanford Law School
The Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology and its Transatlantic Technology Law Forum present
About the event:In May 2010, the European Commission published ‘The Digital Agenda for Europe’, which is one of the seven strategic initiatives of the EU’s ‘The Europe 2020 Strategy’ program. Significant parts of ‘The Digital Agenda’ are based on research carried out by Professor Patrick van Eecke who teaches at theUniversity of Antwerp and is a partner in the Brussels office of DLA Piper.
In this talk Prof. van Eecke will discuss new information processing and communication technologies (ICT) and their substantial effect on corporate and private life. In light of the speed of technological change, legislation oftentimes fails to provide legal decision makers with guidance on how to solve problems arising from the use of new information technologies. Prof. van Eecke will provide an overview of current legal issues surrounding web 2.0 applications, cloud computing, instant messaging and augmented reality from a European perspective. He will then contrast the EU legislator’s approach to regulating ICT with the US legislator’s approach.
Finally, Prof. van Eecke will discuss future trends, their impact on present legislation and how the EU legislator is planning to address these challenges.
