Effective public policy depends on gathering accurate data and then translating that data into clear, concise accounts for policymakers, analysts, experts, and lay audiences. Most public policy research finds its voice in standard policy memo formats – empirical research reports, white papers, findings memos, action memos, and briefing papers. This Policy Lab workshop will introduce you to the differences among these formats and the differences and similarities that policy writing shares with legal research briefs. The workshop offers examples drawn from real-world Policy Lab projects to help you condense your research into lucid accounts of complex policy conclusions that will guide the decisions of policy clients and stakeholders. Come ready to tackle some of the issues you are confronting in your policy research and leave with insights and techniques that clarify your findings and persuasively advance your recommendations. This is part of Elements of Policy Analysis (Law 7846) and is open to the Stanford community.
