A View From the Bench: A Conversation with Judge John Owens, JD ’96

Join the SLS Seattle community at the beautiful downtown offices of K&L Gates for an engaging discussion with Judge John Owens, JD ’96, on his professional journey post-SLS. Judge Owens’ path to the Ninth Circuit bench has included clerking for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, serving as an assistant United States attorney, and representing individual and corporate clients in private practice. Judge Owens will answer a few questions from Seattle Chapter Co-Chair Mark Middaugh, JD ’14, then have a discussion with our audience. Refreshments and lunch will be served.

Judge John Owens, JD ’96

Judge Owens was nominated to the U.S.Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on January 6, 2014 by former President Barack Obama, and confirmed to the bench by the Senate on March 31, 2014. He clerked for Judge J. Clifford Wallace for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1996-1997, and clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg from 1997-1998. He has experience as a trial attorney, an assistant U.S. attorney, and in private practice. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in 1993 and from Stanford Law School with a Juris Doctorate in 1996. He is currently a member of Stanford Law School’s Board of Visitors.
