Biography
Margaret Warthon is a Ph.D. candidate in Law at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. She is also a researcher with the Security, Technology, and e-Privacy research group at the same institution and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellow. Her research explores the implications of EU law accountability and transparency requirements for automated decision-making based on biometric data in the public sector. Margaret obtained her law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Göttingen in Germany. Before starting her Ph.D., she completed research trainings at CEIPI and CiTiP, associated with the University of Strasbourg (France) and KU Leuven (Belgium), respectively. While pursuing her Ph.D., she was a visiting fellow with the biometric group at EURECOM, a research institute in digital sciences in France.
With an interdisciplinary background, Margaret is interested in exploring the interplay between various legal frameworks — such as the GDPR, the AI Act, and comparative legislation — regarding the design and use of AI technologies. She also examines how these laws integrate with technical frameworks for their practical implementation. She joined TTLF as an Affiliate in September 2024.
