I think that the other risk of the human in the loop is something I discussed with Michelle Mello of Stanford, probably the top scholar in the country on legal issues affecting medicine. She posed, “Is it fair to the physician to be the human in the loop if the AI is wrong but so human-like and you’ve learned to trust it? It was right the last 20 times and then something goes off the rails, and you (that is, the physician) are the one who’s going to get sued. You’re the one who’s holding the bag.” So there’s just a lot of complexity in this.
