Investigating Mass Atrocity & Trauma

Investigating Mass Atrocity & Trauma 1

Monique Candiff (’21) and Tara Ohrtman (’21), in partnership with Stanford University’s Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Program and at the request of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD), researched and drafted a field guide for investigators interviewing survivors of trauma and mass atrocity with a view toward decreasing re-traumatization and vicarious trauma in a culturally-sensitive way.

Advanced students Gabby McKenzie (20) and Amanda McCaffery (20), in collaboration with the Stanford University’s Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Program, researched the psychological effects and long-term harm inherent to detention, with an emphasis on indefinite and incommunicado detention. This work will inform expert testimony before the International Criminal Court as well as work by lawyers and psychologists challenging conditions of confinement along the U.S.-Mexico border.
