Ethically Sourced “Spare” Human Bodies Could Revolutionize Medicine
Abstract
This short publication discusses the scientific and ethical issues that would be involved in using stem cells to make both non-human and human “bodyoids”—bodies with no possibilities of consciousness or perception. If the scientific difficulties could be surmounted, these would provide opportunities for improving research on animals (including humans) by avoiding the possibility of causing pain, to provide meat without killing sentient creatures, and to provide sources of transplantable organs. The ethical concerns, however, especially with human bodyoids, are substantial.
