Abstract

This project surveyed the academic literature (empirical and normative) to identify the current thinking on the impact criminal trials have on the durability of transitional justice efforts, the deterrence of future crimes and abuses, and the stability of peace agreements. This research will inform ongoing policy debates on the propriety of U.S. support for transitional justice efforts, and specifically criminal accountability mechanisms.
