American Bar Association Resolution on Climate Change

Under the direction of Holland & Knight partner Amy L. Edwards, who chaired the American Bar Association (ABA) Section of Environment, Energy and Resources (SEER), SEER initiated an effort to update the ABA’s 2008 resolution on climate change earlier this year.  The updated resolution urged all levels of government and the private sector to use a broad range of legal mechanisms to address climate change, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero or below as soon as possible; keeping the United States’ fair share of the increase in global temperatures to the lowest possible increase; using the broadest range of legal mechanisms to accomplish these goals; staying in constructive international discussions; and encouraging pro bono work on climate change issues by lawyers.  The updated resolution (No. 111) passed the ABA House of Delegates without opposition at the ABA’s annual meeting in August 2019.  ABA SEER is now working on implementation of the goals in the resolution.
