Funding Anti-Hunger Work with Carbon Credits

Attorneys at Nixon Peabody teamed with sustainability-minded client, Spoonfuls, to tap into the potential of carbon credits generated by the nonprofit’s crucial work. Spoonfuls is an innovative food rescue serving 67 communities in Massachusetts by connecting people experiencing food insecurity with surplus fresh food from restaurants, grocery stores, and other suppliers. Spoonfuls’ daily operations produce valuable carbon credits, and Nixon Peabody provided pro bono legal guidance to help the organization turn those credits into additional funding for their anti-hunger work. Nixon Peabody helped Spoonfuls navigate a complex process and craft an agreement with Brightly, a broker which will market, bundle, and sell the credits to third parties—fueling greater sustainability and fighting hunger at the same time.
