Alexandra Shepard, JD ’99, Tapped To Serve as San Francisco’s First Inspector General

Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra Shepard was appointed San Francisco’s first inspector general, a newly created role charged with investigating corruption, abuse, and conflicts of interest in city government. Shepard helped prosecute former Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru in a sweeping bribery case that garnered national attention. Her appointment follows the passage of Proposition C, a 2024 ballot measure designed to strengthen oversight and accountability in local government.

Reporting to the city controller and the city services auditor, Shepard will have broad authority to investigate wrongdoing, review whistleblower complaints, and recommend policy reforms to the mayor and the Board of Supervisors. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Shepard worked in the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and prior to that was a litigator in private practice.
