Four days after Ralph Nader decided to throw his hat in the presidential ring once again, he named former San Francisco supervisor and one-time mayoral candidate Matt Gonzalez ’90 as his running mate. The consumer rights crusader made the announcement at a February 29 event at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Gonzalez, who worked as a deputy public defender prior to his supervisor position, narrowly lost to Gavin Newsom after campaigning as a Green Party candidate in the 2003 San Francisco mayoral race. Gonzalez went on to open a law firm with Whitney Leigh ’90 after his term on the board of supervisors ended in 2005. Gonzalez is taking a hiatus from private practice—and from the Green Party—to run with Nader as an independent.
