Barbara Babcock, Judge John Crown Professor of Law, Emerita, has been recognized by The Recorder as one of “20 Women Leaders in Law” in the Bay Area. The Recorder describes the 2011 honorees as “living legends” who have helped “blaze what was then a dimly lit trail.”

Babcock is an expert in criminal and civil procedure and a four-time winner of Stanford Law’s John Bingham Hurlbut Award for Excellence in Teaching. She served as assistant attorney general for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice during the Carter administration. In 1972, Babcock became the first woman appointed to the faculty. Later, she was the first woman to hold an endowed chair at Stanford Law. She is the author of Woman Lawyer: The Trials of Clara Foltz, 2011.
