Bernadette Meyler, JD ’03, Carl and Sheila Spaeth Professor of Law, recently chaired Stanford University’s Ad Hoc Committee on University Speech, which the Faculty Senate created in February 2023. The committee’s recommendations focused on articulating clear principles for protecting speech throughout university processes; establishing mechanisms for ensuring that protection; and training students, staff, and faculty on those principles. The goal, Meyler told the Stanford Daily, was to establish new rules around university speech and promulgating the values of free expression throughout the community. The committee’s proposals were adopted by the Faculty Senate at the end of Spring quarter. Meyler also serves as associate dean for research and intellectual life. SL
