Biden Nominates Julia Lipez, JD ’06, to First Circuit and Noël Wise, JSM ’02, to Northern District of California
The Senate Judiciary Committee voted in August 2024 to confirm two SLS alums to the federal bench, although, as of press time, it was unlikely that Maine Superior Court Justice Julia M. Lipez would be confirmed for a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Lipez was four appellate nominees that senators agreed not to confirm as part of a deal Democrats reached with Republicans so they could quickly confirm seven to 13 other nominees before the change in administration. Prior to her state court judgeship, Lipez was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maine, where she served as Appellate Chief from 2019 to 2022. In June, Biden also nominated Noël Wise to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Previously she was an Alameda County Superior Court Judge. From 2021 to 2022, she served as a Judge Pro Tem for the California Second District Court of Appeal.
