Excerpt: Grave Truths
Many have tried (starting famously with Marco Polo) to find the Tomb of Chinggis Qa’an (CQ). All have failed until now. Our expedition spends nine years tracking the possibilities, the histories, the sources, and our instincts to set the criteria for locating the gravesite.
Mountain X is the only place that satisfies all these requirements.
Secrecy
CQ and his family, along with their Shaman advisers, are determined to keep his burial place secret. They accomplish this for over 750 years. They do all they can to avoid discovery. To find the Tomb any search must take that into account.
Shamanism
CQ is a follower of Mongolian shamanism and is daily governed by its advice and support. Therefore his burial place must conform to the following Mongol shaman criteria:
1. CQ must be buried in a place and in a casket consistent with shamanistic funeral practices.
2. Because of the evil forces that invade corpses (“the contagion of death”), CQ’s corpse must be promptly buried, consistent with all shamanistic requirements. (Some claim within fourteen days of death).
3. CQ must be buried strategically as may be necessary to carry out his afterlife missions: to protect his Mongolian people and to “bring the whole world under his sword,” including particularly Southern China, the “Sung Empire.”

Praise: “Nichols is confident he has nailed down the location of the burial site, which he refers to as ‘Mountain X’ for reasons of confidentiality. ‘For now, all I can say is that it’s somewhere within the historical Mongol empire, though the borders of China and Mongolia in those days were non-existent, since he had conquered northern China,’ he says.” –
