Through various dispatches he wrote between 2016 and 2021, former law professor James Rowles chronicles six years of political turmoil in the United States. “They tell the story of what we knew or could have known if we had been paying attention,” Rowles says on his website. “Unlike most books on Donald Trump’s last year in office, this account addresses the responsibility not only of the Republicans but also of the Democrats over these six years for the political situation and the fascist threat that the country now faces, including the failure to prosecute Trump in a timely manner,” according to Rowles, who, since 2022, has written Trenchant Observations, a Substack newsletter also dealing with international law, politics, and security.
