Joseph Thompson, JD ’04, Appointed U.S. Attorney for Minnesota
Joseph H. Thompson was appointed United States Attorney for Minnesota in June 2025. A career federal prosecutor, Thompson has served with the Department of Justice for 16 years, first in the Northern District of Illinois and since 2014 in the District of Minnesota. As the chief of the Fraud & Public Corruption section he oversaw efforts by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to prosecute fraud against state and federal government programs, including as the lead prosecutor in the Feeding Our Future investigation, which was recognized by the Department of Justice as the largest COVID-19 fraud in the United States.
From 2023 to 2024, Thompson served on the special counsel team investigating the alleged mishandling of classified documents found at the Penn-Biden Center in Washington, D.C. and the personal residence of former President Biden.
Thompson served as a federal prosecutor in Chicago from 2009 to 2014.
