Justice Elizabeth Grimes, JD ’80, Retires from California Court of Appeal

Justice Elizabeth A. Grimes retired on May 31, 2025, from the California Court of Appeal, Second District, Division Eight, after 15 years on the appellate bench. Grimes was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1997, where she presided over dependency, felony, and general jurisdiction matters and later served as a pro tem justice before her confirmation to the Court of Appeal in 2010.

Before joining the judiciary, Grimes practiced business litigation as a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher for 18 years. Her retirement concluded nearly three decades of judicial service to California, during which she was active in legal education and professional service, including work on the Judicial Council’s Appellate Practice Curriculum Committee and the editorial board of California Litigation.
