Lillian Riemer BeVier ’64 Retires Following Distinguished Career at UVa

When Lillian Riemer BeVier entered Stanford Law School in 1961, she was one of five women in a class of 160 students. But she didn’t let that statistic deter her. She started teaching at the University of Virginia Law School in 1973 and became the first tenured woman professor as well as a nationally recognized First Amendment scholar. She taught Property, Intellectual Property, and Torts. BeVier was frequently recognized for her achievements. For example, in 2006 she received the UVa Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award and in 2010 the UVa Raven Honorary Society faculty award. Among her extracurricular activities was service as a member of the board and vice-chair of the Legal Services Corporation from 2003 to 2009. She retired in 2010.
