Matt Gonzalez, JD ’90, Named to 7×7’s Hot 20 Bay Area Innovators
Matt Gonzalez, chief attorney for the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, was listed by 7×7 magazine—a digital publication covering San Francisco Bay Area fashion, lifestyle, food, culture, opinion, and entertainment—as one of The Hot 20 of 2017. Dubbed “The Renaissance Man,” Gonzalez was chosen for his eclectic background in law, politics, and the arts.
He served as a deputy public defender of San Francisco from 1991 to 2001. From 2000 to 2005, he served on San Francisco County’s Board of Supervisors including as president. He co-founded the civil rights law firm Gonzalez & Leigh LLP. And in 2008, he was Ralph Nader’s running mate for the presidential election as independents.
Gonzalez is also a fine artist, represented by Dolby Chadwick Gallery. His found-paper collages have appeared in group shows at Chicago’s Connect Gallery and at S.F.’s Gallery Rocking Horse, Museum of Friends, and Dolby Chadwick. He founded the San Francisco Collage Collective with Robin Savinar and Albert Herter. This collective’s primary objective is to “democratize art by inviting anyone to participate.”
