Nora and David Freeman Engstrom Win Civil Justice Scholarship Award

A co-authored article by Nora Freeman Engstrom, JD ’02, Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law, and David Freeman Engstrom, JD ’02, LSVF Professor in Law, received a 2026 Civil Justice Scholarship Award from the National Civil Justice Institute. The Freeman Engstroms, who co-direct the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession, co- authored the article, “Shedding Light on Secret Settlements: An Empirical Study of California’s STAND Act,” with former students Austin Peters, JD ’22 (PhD ’23), and Garrett Wen, JD ’24, and UC Berkeley Law Professor Jonah B. Gelbach. Their first-of-its-kind research found that limits on secret settlements in sexual harassment and abuse cases did not produce the harms critics predicted and instead offered meaningful benefits for survivors.
