Peter Phipps, JD ’98, Confirmed as Judge for U.S. Court of Appeals

Peter Phipps was appointed to U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit by President Trump. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 16, 2019, in a 56 to 40 vote, making him the fourth Trump appointed judge to the Third Circuit, which hears appeals from Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Before his appointment, Phipps served as senior trial attorney in the federal programs branch of the Department of Justice’s Civil Division. During his 14-year tenure at the Justice Department, Phipps received numerous awards and commendations, including the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award. Earlier in his career, he spent three years as an associate at Jones Day, where his practice focused on civil litigation.
