Robert L. Rabin, A. Calder Mackay Professor of Law, received the 2011 John G. Fleming Award in Torts from the Berkeley School of Law in October and delivered the inaugural Fleming Lecture, titled “A Brief History of Accident Law: Tort and the Administrative State.” The award is named for John G. Fleming, a highly regarded U.S. tort law scholar.

In March, Rabin was also awarded the 2012 Francis McGovern Writing Award from the Academy of Court-Appointed Masters, for his writings on the administration of the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund and the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act.

An expert on torts and legislative compensation schemes, Rabin is highly regarded for his extensive knowledge of the history and institutional dynamics of accident law. He is a prolific author on issues relating to the functions of the tort system and alternative regulatory schemes, as well as the co-editor of a classic casebook on tort law.
