During the meeting, we discussed a recent research partnership between CodeX and the San Francisco District Attorney  office, to provide analytical support to its blue ribbon task force investing police misconduct.

The goal of the partnership is to produce structured, aggregated data from non-structured, images of incident reports for the purpose of statistical and probabilistic analysis,” said Shanahan. “CodeX is working with three professors in the Computer Science department to incorporate a variety of new computer science techniques. These include, Professor Christopher Re and his DeepDive team who have developed machine learning techniques to automatically create structured data from unstructured text and images; Professor Gregory Valiant who specializes in algorithms, applied probability, and statistics; and, Jure Leskovec who specializes in machine learning methods to diagnose biases in human decision making.

CodeX and its partners at Stanford are working to coordinate with the White House’s police data initiative, which is being spearheaded by the Office of Science and Technology Policy | The White House, the Chief Technology Officer’s office, and Clarence Wardell, who currently serves as Presidential Innovation Fellow.
