Breaking Down Barriers of Legal Tech Adoption

Mark Michels, Director in Deloitte Transactions & Business Analytics, has been a long-time attendee at the CodeX FutureLaw conference—and a frequent contributor to Legaltech news (née Law Technology News). Michels has covered three of the four FutureLaws for Ltn; this year he reports on the panel, “Breaking Down the Barriers of Legal Technology Adoption.”

The panel featured Elizabeth Lowell, Stanford; Ralph Baxter, CodeX; Brad Newman, Cooley; Joshua Walker, Airbus Silicon Valley; Doug Luftman, Lecorpio; and Nick Abrahams, Norton Rose Fulbright. I moderated the panel.

Among his observations, Michels noted that Lowell’s comments aligned with keynote speaker James Sandman’s remarks. “Legal technology adoption faces the conundrum that, because it is particularly difficult to sell to legal players and scale quickly, it is difficult to raise venture capital funding,” she said.

Michels also cited Newman’s suggestion that “clients really area major drivers” when it comes to tech; and Baxter’s comment that “the rise of legal operations may be the most significant development driving more rapid legal technology adoption in the market.”
